Like Mona, I am constantly blown away by this series. Every time I think ‘that’s it, they can’t top this’ the writing duo behind Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series do it again.

In Magic Rises this series moves into a whole new level – and prepares readers for some more awesomeness on the way.

I always feel like my reviews never do this series justice because I can’t seem to articulate just how special it is to me. The only words I seem to find are “wow” “awesomesauce” and more “wow” but it really is special. It never lets me down. It is the awesomegravy.

For a 24-hour period every year I can forget everything in real life and get sucked into the world of Kate, Curran and pack and people…

Mona already discussed the premise so I can just go right on into my review – Magic Rises is definitely a turning point in the series, it’s the first time we see what the shifters beyond Curran’s pack are like and really, what the world beyond Atlanta is like, one of the things we learn is – there’s no place like home. Oyi.

Kate’s place as Curran’s consort is constantly questioned, and Curran doesn’t seem to be helping what with all the allowing one young shifter to break pack protocol… Then there’s the fact that Hugh is back – and he knows exactly who Kate is, while leaving Kate guessing what exactly it is he wants from her. It seems like everything Kate has built in her life is about to come falling down around her. Still, this is Kate, and she loves to have the final word.

And in all of this craziness – there’s a cure to loupism on the line and a pregnant shifter who acts like something out of 15 and pregnant with two possible dads, one certifiable granddaddy and who’s babysitting? Yup, the Beast Lord’s pack.

In fact, meeting all these new characters makes Post-shift Atlanta look positively mundane.

Magic Rises also has some very dark moments – including the loss of one beloved character and it seems like there is still more darkness ahead, but the ingredients that make this series the literary version of chocolate soufflé with a dollop of whipped cream and cherry on top are all here – action, adventure, humor and the most kick ass heroine out there.

There are series where you feel that now would be a good time to say “The End” but after reading Magic Rises, all I ask of Ilona and Gordon Andrews is – Please write this series until you just don’t feel like writing it anymore? ‘K?

An MA in conflict studies (need a mediator?) means Noa loves a good debate, especially when she wins. If she were in charge, books would be free for everyone.
