ARC Review “It Started With A Dare” by Lindsay Faith Rech

Self-proclaimed nobody CG Silverman sees her move to an upscale new school as her chance to be somebody different. Her devil-may-care attitude attracts the in-clique, and before CG realizes it, a routine game of truth or dare launches her to iconic status.

While this rebel image helps secure CG’s new found popularity, it also propels her through a maze of unprecedented chaos, with each new lie and every dare opening doors that, in most cases, were better off left shut.

CG is on a collision course with disaster. Will she be able to keep up the facade? Or will the whole world find out she’s a fraud?

I would say that this is a PG-13 book. It deals with a bunch of serious issues (sex, drugs, cheating, alcohol use, bad language, and a lot of lying) that today’s youth go through on some level that are probably too mature for us anyway, but nevertheless kids today deal with them, so they are addressed in the book. I also want to say that despite the seriousness of the issues that are talked about in the book, it was a fun read.

CG (Cindy) Silverman is a very different type of heroine. She is desperate to change her image and will stop at nothing to achieve her ultimate goal of becoming the most popular girl in her new school. She lies about EVERYTHING and as readers we get a first hand look into her thought process as she delivers some whoppers! Not only is she a despicable liar, but in her desperation to become someone she isn’t she does some pretty shocking things (like making out with an older guy at a party and spreading rumors about herself) that the old “CG” would never have done.

Yet, through this whole fiasco, you can’t help but route for CG to come out on top. It’s not very often that books show us the perspective of someone who is knowingly doing wrong and because of that I found this book really interesting and pretty much read it in one sitting. The author has written a story that is light and easy despite the complicated scenarios that the characters deal with, and she made it fun and entertaining to boot.

CG Silverman probably wouldn’t be someone I’d personally hang out with, but she sure was fun to read about on a lazy summer day. If you find yourself without anything else to read and like teen drama type of books I suggest giving this author a try and borrowing it from a library. Her writing style is very nonchalant and relatable to the younger crowd, much like a teenage sitcom…very familiar, but enjoyable for what it was.

Desilula

Day is a dreamer who has never met a stranger. She is fearless and will talk to anyone and read anything! She taught music and dance and was a singer/actress for years, performing on stages both nationally and overseas. Now married with children, she spends less time singing on stage and more time writing songs at home. But, family life has not completely slowed this chick down. She still loves an adventure and learning new things. She resides in Texas with her family, Great Dane (Sophie), Labradoodles (George & Cosmo) and Chihuahua (Juan Carlos).

  • I read this novel several months ago from Net Galley and I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed it! CG was just a hilarious character and I could have spent several more books inside her head, hehe … the situations she got herself into in her quest for popularity were almost bizarre after a while, lol, but it was super entertaining :)
