City of Bones; Mortal Instruments book 1
Mortal Instruments Series Book 1
Their hidden world is about to be revealed….
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it’s hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary’s mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know….
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book! It was a mixture of all the things I love about young adult fantasy…great characters, fantastic world building, and loads of adventure! Clary is one of the more likable characters I have had the pleasure of getting to know lately. She isn’t overly whiny or helpless and she isn’t overly confident or some über-hero. Clary is just the right combination; making her journey and actions believable to the reader…and she has red hair and freckles, which makes her really cool in my book.
I even loved the supporting characters in this series. They are all likable and interact like real life friends in a group would with one another. Isabelle is the beautiful, confident tough girl that is sassy and can seem cool, but she is not with out her good layers;). Alec is the cold, silent tough guy with hidden secrets, but once he warms up to you shows his soft heart. Simon…what can I say about Simon? He reminds me so much of one of my real life best friends. Then of course there is Jace (I love Jace)….the perfect blend of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. And speaking of Skywalker, that is exactly what this story reminds me of… it is a modern “Harry Potter” type of twist on one of the greatest epic stories ever…Star Wars! But, instead of aliens, planets, spaceships, Jedi knights, and Darth Vader- in City of Bones we get to read about demons, dimensions, flying motorcycles (that are magicked by demon blood), Shadowhunters, and Valentine- Not to mention the fairies, elves, were wolves, angels, vampires and all the other myths that come together to make this story incredible!
I cannot wait to read the next books in the trilogy…though I have to wait until my mom reads them first before she gives me the green light. I will say that there was an itty bitty bit of harsh language and adult content, but other than kissing nothing really happened where that stuff was concerned, I guess you’d say it was PG-13. Regardless, I love the story and characters!
If you haven’t read Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, you are totally missing out! GO. READ. NOW!

It is a really good series! Thanks Des!
I love this series and am so glad that Cassandra is in a fashion keeping it going.
I'd been putting off reading this for some reason, and now I'll have to pick it up. How do you think guys will like it? My sons are 15 and 16. I like to share books with them.
It is totally something that boys that like to read will appreciate. My brother is 14 and he likes them, I think partly cause there are two real heroes in the story, Clary and Jace, so you get the best of both worlds!
Thanks Desi! I'll pick it up:)
Owh!This is amazing!I read the 1st book and I really want the sequels badly!
Any time I read or hear Jace's name I swoon, v. surely. He's so great I never get tired of him. And then there's the wish to be Clary *sigh*
Thank you for the awesome review that made me pick up the series in the first place :)
