Purchase: - Barnes & NobleWith her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace. She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone new to town-a mysterious individual named Magnus. After an uneasy encounter with Morganville’s latest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn’t merely human. But is he a vampire-or something else entirely?
As LAST BREATH begins, we see a different dynamic going on inside the Glass House. With Eve and Michael engaged, for once the stress inside the home is more of the self inflicted kind. Eve is all a frenzy planning the wedding. She is burying herself in the details and doesn’t seem to notice the shift in Michael’s demeanor…but Claire and Shane do and they begin to worry. It becomes obvious that there is a specific feeling about the nuptials that for once put both humans and vampires on the same side and that side isn’t in favor of our favorite Goth Girl and Vamp boy couple. With the wedding plans preoccupying the residents of the Glass House, and all of Morganville in general, a stranger manages to make his way through town seemingly unnoticed by everyone except Claire.
Claire doesn’t think too much about it until she see’s first hand something that set’s Myrnin off in a way she never has seen before. For once Myrnin is genuinely scared. He gives Claire an ominous warning to get somewhere safe and then runs straight to the founder Amelie to deliver a message. It is here that we see a very different side to the cool and collected Amelie and many things begin to reveal themselves and it is emotional.
Myrnin and Shane really shined in this book. They both were heroes that played pivotal parts in the story and for once I am stumped as to which one my heart belongs to. I have always been a team Shane girl, but if I am honest there was a secret part of me that wanted Shane to go away so I could see Myrnin perhaps have a true chance at happiness maybe even for the first time.
Claire was her usual bright and caring self, but in LAST BREATH she shows more of her stubborn and angry side that we have seen glimpses of previously. That stubbornness was two-fold though, on one hand it drove me crazy when she was holding a grudge against someone, but on the other it proves to be a saving grace when Claire refuses to except a situation that she finds herself in.
Every character had really great moments…even Oliver made me happy. I have never actually been a huge fan of his character, but in LAST BREATH I found myself understanding him better and loving him in a way I never expected.
LAST BREATH is the best book so far in the Morganville series. Rachel Caine has written a story that showcases the character’s growth, moves the plot along successfully and still leaves mystery. I enjoyed this book cover to cover. It was thrilling, engrossing, heartbreaking and at times funny. There was never a dull moment!
Great review – thanks.
