Believer’s Book Recommendations For Everyone On Your List!

Submitted by Doll Believer on December 6, 2011 – 9:45 amOne Comment

Tis the season to be purchasing wonderful books for all the lovely people on your list.  Are you stuck for ideas? Let me make a few suggestions!

CHILDREN

Spread a little magic by sharing any or all of these stunningly beautiful pop-up books with the lucky children on your list.  But these aren’t childish pop-up books by any means! These books are gorgeous and the illustrations make the magical creatures come to life before your eyes.  A true treasure for your shelves.

  • Encyclopedia Mythologica: Fairies and Magical Creatures Pop-Up by Matthew Reinhart  More Here
  • Encyclopedia Mythologica: Gods and Heroes Pop-Up by Matthew Reinhart  More Here
ADULTS WHO LOVE BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS
I adore large coffee table books filled with gorgeous photos and this year I have two fantastic books to recommend.
  • LIFE 75 Years: The Very Best of LIFE by Editors of Life - Filled with iconic images of great moments in history and from our popular culture this beautiful book is the American photo album.
  • A Day in the Life Series - This stunningly beautiful series of books spans 10 countries.  Photographers sought to capture a day in the life of each of these countries with over 2500 exposures shot by over 15 photographers in the course of one day.  The photos were then bound into each volume providing a breath taking peek into the every day life of each country.
ADULTS WHO LOVE MODERN LATIN AMERICAN FICTION WRITTEN IN ENGLISH:
I am an enormous fan of a series of books written by Victor Villasenor.  Part memoir, part fictional retelling of family lore – these books are beautifully written with larger than life stories and imagery following one Chicano family through the years. Just gorgeous!
  • Rain of Gold by Víctor E. Villaseñor
  • Thirteen Senses: A Memoir by Victor Villasenor
  • Beyond Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor
ADULTS WHO LOVE MODERN LATIN AMERICAN FICTION WRITTEN IN SPANISH:
by Laura Esquivel
This book is a gem! Filled with fantastical stories and recipes every house should have a copy.  There is an English language version available and even a movie with English subtitles that is quite good but the book in Spanish is a wonderful example of literature that touches all the senses!

BUSINESS BOOKS:
Marcus Buckingham caused quite a stir when he wrote .  He followed the debut with a series of books that have challenged business leaders and managers to re-evaluate their business practices.  These books are wonderful for people at all levels of business whether recent grads or established professionals looking to rock the boat.
NON-FICTION:
Do yourself a favor and buy every recent high-school graduate you know a copy of   by Thomas J. Stanley. In fact, make sure you have a copy in your own library.  Stanley’s thoroughly researched study of American wealth will probably surprise most readers as he and his co-author William Danko turn the stereotype of the American millionaire on it’s ear. Just remember, “Big hat, no cattle”.
Stanley has published several books in this series and they are all engaging and provocative.  The timing could not be better for Stanley’s latest book, Stop Acting Rich: …And Start Living Like A Real Millionaire by Thomas J. Stanley
BOOKS FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO KNOW THE HOWS AND WHYS OF EVERYTHING

  •  by Simon Garfield
Still need more suggestions? Stay tuned for our blog’s on the best books from 2011!
XOXO – Believer
Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved to read story books. She devoured them because they were full of magical possibilities with every turn of the page. Then the little girl grew up and school work occupied more and more of her time. Eventually the little girl graduated from school, trading in poets & prose for business management & autobiographies. Magic was left behind in her quest for the top and the world became a place filled with “paradigm shifts”, ROI & financial reports. Before she knew it, the girl was a woman who felt out of touch with the world’s magic until she met Birth and her sister Death. While Birth filled her with wonder & happiness; Death filled her with sadness & loss. And so one day she set aside the management books and instead picked up a paperback story filled with vampires, shifters & telepaths. Lo and behold, her passion for these stories blossomed and the woman became a believer in the magic of reading, again. My name is Believer9200 and I believe in the magic of stories because they give me hope.
