A witch’s work is never done, and in bestselling author H. P. Mallory’s mesmerizing new novel, Jolie Wilkins finds that the real magic is only just beginning. For smart and sexy witch Jolie Wilkins, being Queen of the Underworld is a royal pain. Back from a round of time travel, Jolie must now protect her realm from the sinister Lurkers–a powerful breed of half-humans bent on conquering the undead. And if there’s one thing she knows, it’s that the supernatural never go down without a fight. At least Jolie has her soul mate (and “finally” official boyfriend), warlock Rand Balfour, by her side. Honorable, brave, and unbelievably handsome, Rand is everything Jolie wants in a man. So why can’t she forget the dangerously alluring vampire, Sinjin Sinclair? With her private life heating up and a battle boiling over, Jolie sets out to prove that in matters of love and war, the fairer hex has its own set of charms.

As usual, a great many things were going on in this latest offering, and I had to stop several times just to go back and jog my memory on a particular character. But it was worth the huge cast to get to this point.
Jolie is bonded with Rand, and Sinjin is banished for his trickery, but Jolie still cares for the vampire and worries about him living in exile. After being abducted by Luce, the leader of the Lurkers, she learns she has a sister, which comes as no small shock. She also has a secret, and prays Luce doesn’t find out.
Jolie is still trying to fit into in her role as Queen of the Underworld, but sometimes the title becomes more like a leash, chafing and tedious. After her experiences in this book, her perspective shifts somewhat and we see her truly growing into the title.
I enjoyed watching Jolie grow and finally begin to accept who and what she is. Sinjin is always interesting and sexy, and it’s refreshing to see how much he really cares for her. I haven’t seen as much growth in Rand, but perhaps that’s just as well. It leaves something to look forward to.
If you haven’t read the earlier books in the series, you really should do so before reading this one—it’s definitely not a stand-alone. Even though a condensed version is worked into the story, you’ll miss a lot of the background that pulls it all together. Definitely a series worth following.

Mona's first grade teacher, Mrs. Stanford, gifted her with the love of reading. For that, she'll always live in her heart. But reading took over Mona's life, eclipsing everything but playing sports, and has continued to be a huge part of her life. Although she has always written poetry and stories for her self, last year she decided to try her hand at writing fiction. She is currently editing her first urban fantasy and hopes to have it ready for the agent by summer's end. Besides reading, Mona loves speed in the form of fast cars. The faster, the better! In her next life, she plans to drive race cars (or whatever happens to be their replacement in the future) all while reading and writing. She has also taken up rune reading, and find it to be disturbingly accurate and exciting.
