Riley Blackthorne is beginning to learn that there are worse things than death by demon. And love is just one of them…
Seventeen-year-old Riley has about had it up to here. After the devastating battle at the Tabernacle, trappers are dead and injured, her boyfriend Simon is gravely injured, and now her beloved late father’s been illegally poached from his grave by a very powerful necromancer. As if that’s not enough, there’s Ori, one sizzling hot freelance demon hunter who’s made himself Riley’s unofficial body guard, and Beck, a super over-protective “friend” who acts more like a grouchy granddad. With all the hassles, Riley’s almost ready to leave Atlanta altogether.
But as Atlanta’s demon count increases, the Vatican finally sends its own Demon Hunters to take care of the city’s “little” problem, and pandemonium breaks loose. Only Riley knows that she might be the center of Hell’s attention: an extremely powerful Grade 5 demon is stalking her, and her luck can’t last forever…
Soul Thief is the second book in The Demon Trapper’s Daughter trilogy. The first book hit shelves this past January and was one of my favorite books for a number of reasons but mainly the world building and characters. Set in a near future Atlanta GA where demons are running amok, Riley Blackthorne suffered some big losses in her seventeen years. Now an orphan, she is apprenticed to the Demon Trappers Guild to capture the demons that are out to destroy the world as she knows it but she is no longer doing so under the wing of her father who has now been risen from the dead. Oh, and her boyfriend was nearly killed, there are Angels that she may owe a BIG favor to, her dad’s protegee has planted himself front and center into her life and is driving her crazy and the biggest demon she’s ever seen calls her by name…needless to say the girl has a lot to deal with and like a real seventeen year old, Riley isn’t perfect and doesn’t always make the best choices.
Jana Oliver has once again left me wanting more. The characters are memorable and the attention to details like accents and getting the vernacular right are really excellent. Many author’s that write for a young adult audience don’t spend as much time on things like that and it is just one example of the quality of writing. I also love the landmarks and places that the author describes. Sure, it helps that Oliver lives in Atlanta, but she has incorporated the familiar with just enough twist to make her future demon infested Atlanta come to life for the readers.
I was really intrigued by the introduction of the Vatican (Catholic Church big shots) into the mix. I am beginning to see some politics being played and find it really believable. One thing I know about organized religion is that the people that run it are flawed because they are human and we all have our limitations. It’s really interesting to see how that begins to play out, especially where Simon, Riley’s deeply religious boyfriend and fellow Trapper, are concerned. Simon has always been devout in his beliefs and like anyone who believes so strongly about something it could be really shattering to discover that it isn’t as great as you thought it was…the potential there is endless.
Ahhhh….and Beck. What can I say about him? I wish there was more Beck in this book. Don’t get me wrong, he is definitely a main player and we discover more about who he is and where he comes from. I love this character SO much. There were times I wanted to punch him despite my adoration of him…you’ll find out why;).
Demons, Angels, trappers, hunters, witches, necromancers-there is so much going on in this book. Riley is on a road to not only discovering the truth about her world and family, but to self discovery as well. As she has her share of mistakes and deals with everything the old saying “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger” really rings true to her character. With the battle between good and evil heating up the story could go in any direction. One thing is for sure, Jana Oliver has hooked me and left me guessing. Please Ms. Oliver, I want s’more. ;)
I haven’t read the first book since its not available here. But your review just makes me want to check this series. I’ll try to get a copy of the first book and hopefully to win this one. Thanks for the chance.

I kind of liked Beck and was pissed with Riley for being such a jerk to him. He was always thinking for her and protecting her, but she just doesnt appreciate him. Ohoh, and I want to read more on the other person(I forgot his name!:/) whom Riley met and who saved her at the end of the first book.
