Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

The setting of this book was really neat! It takes place present day in a small town in the civil war ridden south where plantation homes still line streets and reenactments of confederate battles still occur. But, in this town there is a secret hidden magical world that holds powers that the towns people have NO idea even exists.

There is a balance to everything, and in Beautiful Creatures we see balance, along with a “To Kill A Mockingbird” message as basic themes.

The overall storyline is pretty simplistic and interesting until you add in all the paranormal touches which are thread throughout the entire book and what holds everything together tightly.

Basically, a girl named Lena moves into town to live with her outcast uncle who the town gossips about and despises though none of them actually know the man. At the time she moves to town, Ethan, a town native begins having strange and realistic dreams about a girl and a haunting melody. Imagine his surprise when Lena is the new girl at school…you see where this is going yet? You guessed it. A budding star crossed lovers storyline with a few twists!

The romance is good. Ethan proves to be one of those too perfect for words heroes that you wish really existed. I wasn’t as big a fan of Lena’s character…but that could just be because I may have been a tiny bit jealous of her because, well, did I mention how cute and perfect the character of Ethan is? *blushes*

Lena and her family come from a very old and magical bloodline that goes beyond anything I expected!

Anyway, the supporting characters and the mystery are, in my opinion, the real winners of this book. The quirky way they interact with one another and the secret lives some of them have are what made this book really interesting to me, especially since the book is SO long. Those extra touches added to the setting and characters helped hold my interest.

Beautiful Creatures is a good book. I recommend it to people who want to read a descriptive Gothic tale with swoon worthy romance and funny characters. But I warn you…at 592 pages it is a pretty long book!

Desilula is our resident "Tween" who helps give us insight to all the Young adult and children's books from the perspective of....well...a young adult. She loves to read and write and absolutely hates math! Her favorite books include classics like "Little Women" and "Alice in Wonderland", but she is hip with all the latest young adult books including her favorite, "Hunger Games"! She enjoys hanging out with friends and doing activities like swimming, skate boarding, climbing trees, and performing in plays or musicals. She plays a little piano, and a little guitar (mostly power chords;)) and has played in a band. She loves animals and plans to travel the world someday!
