Zombie Week! The Walking Dead-Graphic Novel guest review by honorary doll Karen

The Walking Dead: Volume 1
Days Gone Bye – Graphic Novel
By: Robert Kirkman & Tony Moore

An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

This was my first graphic novel so it was a new reading experience for me. I have to admit that it was little awkward in the beginning. There is no build up or introduction to the characters and the writing is pretty simplistic. The protagonist Rick, is a cop, he’s shot, slips into a coma, wakes up and there are zombies. I kept going back to make sure I was starting with the first issue because I felt like I was missing part of the story. I chalk this up to my inexperience with comics and graphic novels though. Somewhere around page 10 when Rick starts meeting up with fellow survivors the story kicks in and I was hooked!

As with all good zombie stories, it is really all about the survivors and this series has a surprisingly complex storyline. As Rick wakes from his month long coma to find the world changed and his wife Lori and son Carl missing, I found myself hanging on every word, flipping as quickly as I could to find out what happened. I read the first volume in about an hour. It’s not enough to survive the zombie invasion – you have to try to survive with your humanity intact. The Walking Dead expertly explores this dilemma. It was so addictive that I went out that day and bought the Compendium containing volumes 1 – 8. I’m finding it very difficult to not peek ahead to find out what happens.

There is a lot of zombie violence but like I said earlier,it’s the human emotions that pull you in. The WalkingDead is about survival, love, loss, conflict, betrayal and….gore….plenty of gore.
At only 144 pages I don’t want to give the whole plotaway so forgive my abbreviated review – just go buy it!It’s good!

The Walking Dead TV series based on the graphic novels will be premiering on AMC on Halloween night and it looks amazing! We could finally have an intelligent, well-made zombie series to watch.

Day is a dreamer who has never met a stranger. She is fearless and will talk to anyone and read anything! She taught music and dance and was a singer/actress for years, performing on stages both nationally and overseas. Now married with children, she spends less time singing on stage and more time writing songs at home. But, family life has not completely slowed this chick down. She still loves an adventure and learning new things. She resides in Texas with her family, Great Dane (Sophie), Labradoodles (George & Cosmo) and Chihuahua (Juan Carlos).

I find it interesting that the actor in this new Zombie show played Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights…Last week was Passport to England and this week is Zombies…coincidence? Hmmm…

BTW_ I fixed the typos, the text got wonky when I was entering it into blogger. Sorry:)

  • This Zombie book sounds good and did I understand you that there are 8 volumes. Are those avail at all bookstores or should you look in comic stores. Maybe I should just stick to amazon. I can't wait to see the new Zombie series that is coming out on AMC, I believe it is this Sunday. Thanks for posting :)

  • My husband and I have enjoyed this series for awhile now. It's dark, gritty, and tense – characters are always trying to be who they were and battle against who they think they need to be in order to survive.

You can buy the series at the bookstore (It's also at Walmart) but it's cheaper to buy the compendium – chapters 1-8 on Amazon if your planning on reading the series.
They are up to volume 12 with 13 coming out in Novemeber.
Warning – it's very addictive once you start!!
    <3 you guys!!
