Blog Tour Character Interview with Charley Davidson and Giveaway: Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

Submitted by on August 16, 2011 – 3:24 am40 Comments

Q: We’d like to welcome as our guest today part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper Charley Davidson. Thank you for being here.

A: You’re very welcome. Do you have a little girl’s room?

[Cue easy listening music.]

Q: Okay, well, let’s get started. The grim reaper. That’s not something you hear everyday. What’s it like?

A: You were expecting a dark robe with skeletal remains underneath, weren’t you?

Q: *clears throat* Not at all. Well, a little.

A: No worries. I’m actually made of light and the departed can see me from anywhere in the world. Those departed who didn’t go through the light when they first died are drawn to me and can cross to the other side through me. I’m like a portal, or a turnstile.

Q: That’s very cool. So you can see dead people?

A: Only when my eyes are open.

Q: Oh…kay. Do you do anything special with them?

A: Like the Tango?

Q: Well, no, I meant do you help them in any way?

A: Oh, right, I help them with their unfinished business. You know, so they can cross.

Q: That’s interesting. Can you give an example?

A: Of unfinished business? You’d be amazed at how many people forgot to turn off the stove. Then there are the ones who just want to tell their loved ones that they love them. So many people don’t say it. Then they get sucked into a jet engine and there they are, feeling guilty.

Q: So jet engines are dangerous.

A: Darn tootin’. And of course, there are those who were murdered and want me to help solve their cases. Those are the really interesting ones.

Q: And you were born the grim reaper? You’ve been one all your life?

A: I was born THE grim reaper. Not sure how it all happened though. I mean, why me? I can’t say there weren’t times I just wanted a normal life. A partially decapitated classmate showing up in the shower is not walk in the park, let me tell you. And try talking to the dead at the DMV. It’s tricky.

Q: So, would you give it up if you could?

A: Never. Even with all the challenges I face on a daily basis, I’ve never really hated it. I like helping them, solving their mysteries so they can rest in peace. And some of my best friends are dead.

Q: And do you have a significant other?

A: Oh, yes. Her name is Cookie. She is the best dirt-cheap receptionist money can buy. And she’s my best friend.

Q: So, you’re dating?

A: Cookie? She wouldn’t have me if I were the last human on Earth. But there is a guy.

Q: Can you tell us about him?

A: Absolutely. His name is Reyes and he’s the part-human, part-supermodel son of Satan. But I don’t hold it against him. My stepmother would give Lucifer a run for his money.

Q: You’re dating the son of Satan?

A: Dating is a strong word, Q. More like “having a relationship” with. If he wasn’t the sexiest thing on two legs this side of Mars, I might could turn him down. But a being forged in the fires of sin who tastes like lightning and cotton candy? Forget about it.

Q: Your life sounds so interesting. Unfortunately we’re out of time, but I’d love to have you back. Do you have any parting words of advice?

A: Yes. Tell the people you love that you love them. Don’t let them doubt it for a minute. And turn off the stove!

LOL, thank you so much for having me, Kitt, and everyone at Paperback Dolls! I would love to give away a signed hardcover of SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT, where you can learn more about Charley Davidson than you’d ever want to know. :)

Thank you so much Charley and Darynda for letting us sit in on the interview! We can’t wait to read Second Grave on the Left!!

For reasons known only to the Big Guy upstairs, Darynda Jones won the 2009 Golden Heart® for Best Paranormal Romance with her manuscript FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT. But even before that, she couldn’t remember a time she wasn’t putting pen to paper. When she was five, she would pick up a pencil and notepad, scribble utter chaos onto the page and ask her mom to read her masterpiece aloud. Thankfully, her mother would play along. Later, she wrote plays for the neighborhood kids, made up stories for her brother as he played cars, and fell in love with Captain Kirk. Those raging, seven-year-old hormones only fueled her imagination, prompting her to create fantastical stories for Barbie and Ken to enact with plots that were horridly inappropriate to repeat in polite company. Read More…

Book one in the Charley Davidson series, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, was a hardcover release in February 2011 with book two, SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT, coming out in August 2011 and book three, THIRD GRAVE DEAD AHEAD, in February 2012. She hopes you enjoy reading the series as much as she has writing it.

Darynda lives in the Land of Enchantment, also known as New Mexico, with her husband of more than 25 years and two beautiful sons, the Mighty, Mighty Jones Boys.

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans

When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

I found the change in cover styles really interesting. I wonder if that means there will be more action and danger in this book than the first.

Love the first book and so desperate to find a way to get my hands on the 2nd! (and the publishing date is just that bit later on this side of the pond). So Darynda and Charley – whichever one of you may pick the winner – can I just jump up and down and keep repeating “Pick me! Pick me!, Pick me! – pretty please!”
