Special Feature: Melissa Marr “Thankful” Q&A + Giveaway!

Submitted by on November 17, 2011 – 7:42 am25 Comments

One author who’s work I (Day) am thankful for is Melissa Marr. She never ceases to entertain me with her twisty worlds and crafty way with words. There is a darkness to her stories but also a poetic beauty that is enthralling. The depth of her characters and their relationships with each other is at times heartbreaking, but always satisfying to read. She is one of the authors that I grow more impressed with each new story and has my utmost respect for her consistency and the gracious and professional manner that she interacts with her fans.

Although I am full of thanks to this author for sharing her talent and stories with the world, I am also quite thankful to Melissa Marr for participating in our Special Feature this month and answering a few questions about Thanksgiving, nostalgia and more…

Author Melissa Marr

Dolls: What are you most Thankful for professionally and/or personally?
Marr: My family. Without them, nothing else would matter.

Dolls: Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where families seem to make their own traditions. Do you have any traditions that you feel are unique to you?
Marr: We don’t really celebrate Thanksgiving with any sort of regularity. Sometimes we do, but just as often we don’t. However, in our 20s, we used to do a “misfits meal” for any of the Marines at my spouse’s unit and assorted other friends who weren’t going home for the holiday.

Dolls: For many Americans, Thanksgiving is favorite holiday because of the food! Do you have a favorite dish that you look forward to enjoying every Thanksgiving?
Marr: Nope. Not me, I eat whatever folks prepare. If I’m cooking, I like to make a sweet potato apple dish that my daughter & I really like.

Dolls: Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving memory?
Marr: 1998. My grandmother met my 6 week old son for one of the only 2 times in her life. A few weeks later, Gramma was in the hospital. That Thanksgiving, though, was the last visit before we knew she was ill.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate, many thanks to you and yours!

Melissa grew up believing in faeries, ghosts, and various other creatures. After teaching college lit for a decade, she applied her fascination with folklore to writing. Wicked Lovely, the first novel, was simultaneously released in the US and UK by HarperCollins in 2007 (with translation rights also sold in seven countries). It debuted as a NY Times Bestseller. Critical responses both here and abroad have been positive. Ink Exchange, the second novel, released in late April 2008 in North America. Currently, Melissa lives in the DC area, writes full time, and still believes in faeries and ghosts.

As a special thank you to all of you wonderful readers Melissa has given us a copy of her upcoming short story anthology titled Faery Tales and Nightmares!

Day is a dreamer who has never met a stranger. She is fearless and will talk to anyone and read anything! She taught music and dance and was a singer/actress for years, performing on stages both nationally and overseas. Now married with children, she spends less time singing on stage and more time writing songs at home. But, family life has not completely slowed this chick down. She still loves an adventure and learning new things. She resides in Texas with her family, Great Dane (Sophie), Labradoodles (George & Cosmo) and Chihuahua (Juan Carlos).

I adore the Wicked Lovely series! What got me even more interested in Melissa’s books were the playlists she had for each book on her website – great idea:) The songs that inspired particular characters and so forth – that helped me imagine Seth, Keenan, Ainslin and the different faerie courts in a particular way. The contrasting courts of Summer, Winter, etc are spellbinding:)

I LOVE the Wicked Lovely series. There’s the faeries and the beautiful writing, of course, but also the fact that Melissa Marr weaves so many threads together. It’s not just Aislinn’s story – it belongs to Seth and Leslie and Keenan and Ani and Donia as well. It’s one of my absolute favorite series!
