The underground population of witches, vampires, werewolves—creatures of dreams and nightmares—has lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But after a genetically engineered virus wipes out a large part of humanity, many of the “Inderlanders” reveal themselves, changing everything.

Rachel Morgan, witch and bounty hunter with the Inderland Runner Services, is one of the best at apprehending supernatural lawbreakers throughout Cincinnati, but when it comes to following the rules, she falls desperately short. Determined to buck the system, she quits and takes off on the run with an I.S. contract on her head and is reluctantly forced to team up with Ivy, Inderland’s best runner . . . and a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shape-changing assassins, outwit a powerful businessman/crime lord, and survive a vicious underground fight-to-the-death . . . not to mention her own roommate.

I know, THE HOLLOWS SERIES by Kim Harrison has been around for a while now so many of you have probably already read the books and many of you love them but I missed the bandwagon somehow. I think quite of few of my friends became engulfed in these book during the time I was working and going to school. I had even purchased DEAD WITCH WALKING quite a while back due to your recommendations and never started. Well, now I have.

The world Harrison has built is really pretty cool if I must say so myself. In a world where a terrible virus has weakened humanity and the “Inderlanders” have come out in force there is so much adventure to be had.  Rachel is a witch and a bounty hunter and she teams up with  Ivy who is one of the best runners they have. It probably doesn’t hurt that Ivy is a living vampire which gives her an advantage in many areas. Throw in a pixy named Jenx and you have quite a trio for your main characters. Don’t let it stop here though, what other awesome Inderland species does Harrison add to her world and what on earth is Trent?
Most of this plot revolves around events that happen once Rachel decides she doesn’t want to be a runner anymore for I.S. she wants to be on her own.  The rumor is that nobody ever leaves I.S. because they will kill them if they leave. When Morgan leaves and Ivy decides to go with her the race is on to keep Rachel alive while she finds herself in many other mishaps along the way.
I love the way the magic in this book is almost believable. Rachel uses earth magic so we see her mixing charms and wearing amulets. I do wish we could just mix up a charm to make ourselves appear prettier in real life. The ground is being set that Rachel is a very talented witch, though we don’t quite know the extent of her powers yet. There also seems to be more to Ivy than we may know at this time.
I also love the dynamics of Rachel’s relationship with Ivy. As we begin to learn the nuances of their relationship it makes for interesting reading and lots of things to ponder. Their friendship is growing and I can see how this will be a mainstay and important piece in the books to come.

I read the book quickly but I found myself a little disappointed that it felt like something was missing and I didn’t have the desire to devour through the book to see what was going to happen next and I honestly felt half way in that I could sit the book down and not care less about the characters. Fortunately my friends told me to keep reading and I did. I will continue on with this series because my friends swear it is going to get awesome and I really do like the idea of the world Harrison has built. Of course I’m always fascinated by heroine’s who are witches. Harrison has given us just enough information on our main characters that we want to find out what else is behind them. What secrets do they have? Why does Rachel seem to have an interesting power and of course will Trent turn out to be good or bad in the end? We will just have to read on to find out.
If you haven’t started these books yet then I recommend you pick one up and jump into the world of Rachel Morgan. It’s quite interesting there.
