Smart Chicks Kick It 2.0: Interview with Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Submitted by on September 29, 2011 – 10:00 am3 Comments

What made you decide to participate in the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour this year?

I had such an incredible time on the Smart Chicks tour last year. I am a huge reader myself–especially of books that feature smart, strong female protagonists–so the idea of being up on stage with the very authors whose work I love is both incredible and surreal. Add to that smart, passionate readers (in large numbers!), and these events are pretty electric. Given that touring as a group also lets me spend time with friends I don’t get to see very often, there was no way I was turning down a chance to revisit the experience again.

Do you have a favorite memory from last year’s tour?

I have a LOT of favorite memories. A large percentage of them come from the Q&A sessions (like the time that someone asked us all “if you got arrested, what would it be for?” and the answers all ended up having a certain theme to them which still makes me giggle) or from one of the games we play with the audience during the event. But for as many wonderful memories as I have of the group parts of the tour, there are also a lot of special ones that involved one-on-one interaction with the readers. I’d never toured before last year, and without the Smart Chicks tour, I probably wouldn’t have an opportunity to travel and meet so many readers in person. I’m very grateful for that.

What are you most looking forward to on the tour this go around?

Can I answer “everything”? If so, that’s the answer. Or (more accurately) everything but the airports.

One thing is for certain…there are some amazing authors on this tour with awesome books… Do you find time to read books by any of your fellow authors on tour? If so, who?

Last year, I read at least one book by every single author on the entire tour. For this year’s tour, I’ve read books by all but one or two of the authors (and I still have a couple weeks left before the tour starts!). All told, I’ve probably read more than fifty books written by the 2011 Smart Chicks–that’s part of the reason that this tour is such an incredible experience for me.

What is next for you?

I have a new book coming out in December. It’s called EVERY OTHER DAY, and it’s about a girl who’s a supernaturally enhanced demon hunter, but her powers only work every other day (hence the title). I’m also working on revisions for the two books I have due out in 2012. One is the third book in the RAISED BY WOLVES series, and the other one is a romance about supernaturally unnoticeable teen assassins.
